A tragic turn of events in Tuscarawas County as Zachary D. Williams, the 20-year-old man previously reported missing, was pronounced dead following a single-car crash yesterday morning. According to WKYC, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Williams' 2004 GMC Sierra veered off U.S. Route 36 in Salem Township, went down an embankment, and collided with several trees. The accident came on the heels of a missing person report filed the night before in Newcomerstown.
Authorities were alerted to the disabled vehicle after 11 a.m., and upon arrival approximately 30 minutes later, they discovered the pickup truck matching the description of Williams’ vehicle. As per the WKYC report, Williams was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor. The ongoing investigation seeks to understand more clearly the events leading to the fatal incident.
Further details provided by FOX 8 emphasized that the pickup truck had travelled west on U.S. 36 before it careened across the center line, off the road, and down the embankment. "Investigators believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash, and they said the victim wasn’t wearing a seat belt," said a statement obtained from the FOX 8 coverage. These factors are a grim echo in the narrative of many such incidents on our highways.
The Canton Repository provided insight into the timeline of the discovery, stating that the driver, Williams, was found more than 14 hours after being reported missing by Newcomerstown Police. A 911 call came about a vehicle over an embankment near Salem Township's boundary with Clay Township. "The location is about a 15-minute drive southwest from New Philadelphia," highlighted the Canton Repository. Emergency responders, including the Tri-County EMS and Delaware Fire Department, were on scene along with the Tuscarawas County sheriff's deputies and the county's coroner's office.
