A two-vehicle crash on southbound MoPac near the 8100 block left one person dead and turned the Tuesday morning commute across North Austin into a slog. Emergency crews shut down multiple lanes and on-ramps for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Authorities later identified the victim and put out a public call for witnesses.
Crash Details and Investigation
According to the City of Austin, Austin Police Department officers responded at about 9:07 a.m. to a collision between two motor vehicles in the southbound lanes of the 8100 block of North MoPac Expressway. APD also flagged the closure on its Facebook page.
One driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. The other driver, identified as Jonhatan Rodriguez (DOB 05/19/2006), was pronounced deceased at 9:27 a.m. Vehicular Homicide detectives documented the scene, and the city reported the wreck as Austin’s 88th fatal collision of 2025, bringing the year’s traffic fatality count to 92.
Traffic Disruptions and Reopening
As reported by MySA, the Texas Department of Transportation and APD confirmed that all southbound main lanes, on-ramps and toll lanes at U.S. 183 were closed during what officials described as an "active police incident." The shutdown turned the MoPac and U.S. 183 interchange into a long, slow-moving line of brake lights.
TxDOT said lanes reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m., easing the worst of the backup for midday drivers. Motorists were urged to take alternate routes while investigators remained at the location.
APD Asks for Help From Witnesses
The city asked anyone who may have seen the crash or has related information to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111 or submit an anonymous tip through Capital Area Crime Stoppers at austincrimestoppers.org, per the City of Austin. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence, and officials noted that details could shift as the case develops.
MoPac Safety and Recent Incidents
Local outlets have documented several serious crashes along the MoPac corridor this year, and coverage of a May collision that killed a bicyclist, which later led to an arrest, has kept safety concerns in the spotlight. Reporting on the May MoPac Bicycle Fatality and other wrecks has added fuel to ongoing calls for steps to reduce deadly crashes on the expressway.
