Landon Perry and David Barkhau of the NC Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) are the latest recipients of the annual Internal Audit Award of Excellence, an accolade that celebrates exceptional contributions to the field of internal auditing within the North Carolina state government. The recognition, bestowed by the Council of Internal Auditing, was officially announced on December 9.

According to an announcement by the Office of State Budget and Management, Perry and Barkhau distinguished themselves through their exemplary professionalism, and dedication which not only bolstered the efficacy of their respective functions within NCDIT, but they also served as leading figures who embodied the internal auditing ethos the award is intended to spotlight. "Landon and David are excellent models of how high-caliber internal auditing contributes to stronger government operations," said Barbara Baldwin, Executive Director of the Council of Internal Auditing, on their commendable performance.

Perry was recognized for updating NCDIT's Office of Internal Audit to align with Institute of Internal Auditors Standards and for mentoring new auditors. Barkhau was honored for his approach to risk assessment and the use of automation to improve audit transparency and efficiency.

At the Office of the State Controller’s Financial Conference, both received a plaque and a $500 prize from the North Carolina Local Chapters of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Nominations for the award come from agencies and universities across the state, with winners chosen for their significant contributions to internal auditing.
