In response to reported increases in immigration enforcement in the Greater New Orleans area, the New Orleans City Council has launched an online portal designed to allow residents to report potential abuse by federal immigration officers and to educate themselves on their rights during such encounters. The "Know Your Rights" webpage serves as a resource amidst the uproar caused by Operation Catahoula Crunch, a recent federal immigration initiative.

As stated by Mayor-Elect Helena Moreno, "The announcement of Operation Catahoula Crunch has caused significant alarm in our city and created a culture of fear among our most vulnerable residents," in a statement obtained by the City of New Orleans. Moreno's stance aligns with New Orleans' commitment to safeguarding the rights of its residents, following reports of seemingly arbitrary detentions and deportations by federal agents. Council President JP Morrell further emphasized the importance of public awareness, urging citizens to educate themselves and remain vigilant against potential abuses.

The City Council's move is not solely fueled by a desire to bolster legal education. It also aims to document reported incidents for further action. Officials have shared deep concerns about the broader implications of heavy-handed immigration tactics on community stability and local economies. District B Councilmember Lesli Harris highlighted the adverse effects of such enforcement actions on New Orleans, noting the closures of local businesses and the atmosphere of fear that permeates immigrant communities.

District C Councilmember Freddie King drew on personal experiences, equating exorbitant immigration enforcement to racial profiling. "The images and videos I've seen are truly heartbreaking, and this isn’t who we should be," he said, as reported on the council's news release. District D Councilmember Eugene Green expressed faith in the local police's adherence to constitutional rights and expressed hope that federal officers will follow suit, despite concerns regarding the recent surge in immigration checks and raids.

To address language barriers, the council has made handouts on rights available in multiple languages, with Arabic translations to be provided shortly. The "Know Your Rights" webpage can be accessed at the City of New Orleans website.
