The festive season in New York City began with the annual tree lighting at the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park. According to ABC7NY, thousands attended to see a 45-foot spruce, weighing over 8,000 pounds, decorated with more than 1,200 ornaments and approximately 12,000 lights. The event included fireworks and performances by costumed skaters on the park’s ice rink.
Open to the public and noted for its inclusivity, the winter event featured figure skaters including Mariah Bell, Kaitlin Hawayek, and Jean-Luc Baker. Actor and chef David Burtka hosted the event, and Tony Award winner Matt Doyle also appeared. Attendees began arriving when the park opened at 3:30 p.m., while those at home could watch via a livestream, FOX 5 New York reported.
“I work right across the street, so just to look out every day and see this tree lit makes you happy. There's just holiday excitement and cheer around this tree,” Connie Verducci, marketing executive at Bank of America, told ABC7NY. The Winter Village, which includes eateries, shops, and a skating rink, will remain open until March 2.
Beyond the lights and fireworks, the Bank of America Winter Village will feature events later in the season, including the return of Santa's Corner, Cozy Igloos, and Bumper Cars on Ice. The village includes over 180 holiday shops curated by Urbanspace and New York City's only free-admission ice rink. The Winter Village continues through January 4, 2026, with the rink and The Lodge operating throughout the season. FOX 5 New York reported that this marks the 13th year of the Winter Village as part of the city’s seasonal traditions.
Public skating resumed shortly after the tree-lighting ceremony, around 6:15 p.m., allowing visitors to skate under the glow of the newly lit tree. The Lodge bar and food hall remained open throughout the event, providing food and beverages to attendees.
