North Carolina Governor Josh Stein recently attended the North Carolina Military Hall of Firsts ceremony, where three military veterans were posthumously recognized for their contributions to the military and the state. The inductees—Sgt. Patricia A. Harris, Maj. Gen. Elizabeth D. Austin, and Maj. Gen. Harvey D. Williams Sr.—were honored for their service and lasting impact, according to a statement from the Governor’s office.
In a press release, Governor Stein stated, “North Carolina has a long and proud military tradition, and today we recognize three servicemembers whose achievements broke new ground." The veterans’ accomplishments span multiple areas of military service, highlighting milestones in inclusivity and leadership within the armed forces. The Governor also noted his ongoing commitment to supporting North Carolina’s military community and promoting the state as a leading location for military families.
Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs recognized the inductees for demonstrating “excellence, selflessness, and patriotism," as stated by the Governor's office. Their work contributed to advancing inclusivity and effectiveness within the military. Harris was noted for her advocacy on behalf of women and veteran families, Austin for her historic rise in the North Carolina National Guard, and Maj. Gen. Williams was honored for numerous pioneering achievements that established his legacy as a leader.
North Carolina has over 90,000 active-duty servicemembers and more than 600,000 veterans. At the ceremony, Governor Stein highlighted recent measures intended to assist military families, including streamlined license transfers for military spouses and adjusted tuition policies for military students within the University of North Carolina System. These efforts are part of the state’s “Do Your Part State” program, which provides support for military families.
