Residents across Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington are bracing for potentially dangerous impacts as a series of flood warnings has been issued, following persistent rainfall and overflow of multiple rivers. According to the National Weather Service in Portland, major flooding is forecast for the Sandy River near Bull Run, which is expected to approach the flood of record.
As outlined in the NWS report, the Sandy River near Bull Run's stage was at 21.3 feet in the early hours of Friday, surpassing the bankfull stage of 18.0 feet, and was projected to reach a crest of 21.8 feet. The rising waters have triggered significant bank erosion and posed a substantial threat to low-lying areas, particularly near Troutdale. Citizens have been warned of the likelihood of landslides and debris flows, adding to the urgency for those in high-risk zones.
Further exacerbating the situation, an atmospheric river event has been dumping volumes of heavy rain over the area, after already enduring a wet month, leaving soils saturated and rivers running high. The NWS continued their flood warning effects, highlighting that this compounded heavy rainfall could potentially lead to urban and small stream flooding, as well as subsequent rises in area rivers – some remaining at flood stage until Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, significant flooding has already begun rolling out its impact on Johnson Creek at Sycamore. Reporting minor, yet ascending to moderate, flooding in the area, the NWS advises that the creek surged past the 11-foot flood stage and was set to crest around 13.2 feet. On-the-ground impacts include evacuations of homes – a historically common measure when the water levels hit this mark. Surrounded by such dire forecasts and the aftermath that follows, residents are urged to observe precautionary measures, avoid flooded roadways, and stay updated with the latest from local weather alerts.
In response to these challenges, local authorities have strengthened their calls for public vigilance, consistently echoing the NWS precautions for people to avoid driving through flooded areas and to adhere to the flood warnings seriously, as sturdy barricades have been put in place for protection. The full extent of flood-related information and safety guidelines can be accessed through the NWS website, providing ample resources for the community to stay informed and protected during these treacherous conditions.
