NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch apologized to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani following remarks made by her brother, Benjamin Tisch, CEO of Loews Corporation, at a Met Council gala that were directed at Mamdani. The apology was conveyed directly to the mayor-elect's team, who stated that Commissioner Tisch expressed a commitment to serve all New Yorkers, including members of the Jewish community.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani emphasized his intention to be an inclusive mayor. He said, "The commissioner apologized to my team for those remarks, and I look forward to being a mayor for each and every New Yorker, including Jewish New Yorkers," according to Gothamist. Mamdani also reaffirmed his commitment to addressing antisemitism, noting that he will appoint a senior adviser dedicated to the issue upon taking office.
NYPD spokesperson Brad Weekes conveyed Commissioner Tisch's perspective on the matter to Fox News Digital, noting her understanding of concerns within the Jewish community and her belief in the mayor-elect's commitment to serve all New Yorkers, including members of the Jewish community. Despite policy differences between Mamdani and Tisch, such as debates over bail reform and the gang database, the mayor-elect has acknowledged Commissioner Tisch's efforts to address corruption within the department.
Amid Mamdani’s recent criticism of Israel and the use of controversial slogans, the incident highlights political and familial complexities. The Tisch family has been politically active, donating over $1 million to a super PAC supporting Andrew Cuomo during the mayoral race, though Commissioner Tisch did not contribute personally. Benjamin Tisch, whose remarks sparked the controversy, has not commented publicly since the gala. Mamdani, who will take office on January 1, emphasized his focus on justice and public safety, stating, "The two of us will not shy away from the fact that we hold disagreements on certain issues… but I also believe that these disagreements are not only reconcilable, but they are the sign of a healthy partnership to come," as reported by Fox News.
The recent events emphasize the importance of communication between leaders with different viewpoints in a diverse city like New York. As Commissioner Tisch and Mayor-elect Mamdani begin their working relationship, city residents will be observing how they manage their differences and collaborate on city governance.
