The update, as announced on the Oak Creek Public Library website, aims to significantly reduce the frustration library patrons often encounter with long hold queues for sought-after titles. Oak Creek's contribution to the initiative is pegged at $5,100, out of the $100,000 total investment by Milwaukee County public libraries.
The decision to potentially increase this investment reflects a commitment to bolster the shared collection, allowing for even greater accessibility to digital resources for the community. "Because the collection is shared across all Milwaukee County public libraries, residents will enjoy equal access regardless of which library they use—just like with physical materials today," the Oak Creek Library detailed in a statement. Aiding to ensure budget predictability, OverDrive's sustainable cost model allows libraries to purchase copies of digital materials as needed, which contrasts sharply with more variable open-ended costs.
The Oak Creek Public Library Board has already earmarked funds for 2026 to support digital content, and they'll reportedly monitor the usage of the Lucky Day collection to decide if additional resources are needed to further enhance it. This initiative, according to library officials, is aimed squarely at meeting user demand for digital reads and listens. The library has chosen to invest in Libby due to its overwhelmingly popular use within the community—it boasts more than one million downloads each year in Milwaukee County alone.
