An NYPD officer is being praised after video surfaced showing him rescuing a choking baby on the Bronx River Parkway. According to PIX11, the officer—who was off duty at the time—responded to a driver’s plea for help when an infant was in distress. Footage shared on TikTok by a bystander shows the officer performing back slaps until the baby was able to breathe again.

Although the officer was not initially identified, he was later named as Detective First Grade Michael Greaney in an interview with The New York Post. Greaney, a father of two toddlers, said he was driving behind a BMW when the child’s father rolled down his window and urgently told him that his baby was choking.

His quick action successfully cleared the airway of the 8-month-old girl and brought relief to her distressed father. Recounting the tense rescue, Greaney told The New York Post that the baby let out a cough signaling relief. A nurse who arrived shortly afterward evaluated the infant and confirmed she was breathing normally again.

Detective Greaney, who works in the office of the Chief of Detectives, remained calm throughout the ordeal while recognizing the fear the father was experiencing. When the baby let out a cry—signaling she was no longer choking—Greaney said the father thanked him. He then encouraged the man to learn how to perform the Heimlich maneuver so he would be prepared to act quickly if a similar emergency ever occurred.
