In a recent briefing to the Ohio State University Board of Trustees, leaders highlighted the academic accomplishments of their student-athletes. According to a report by OSU News, the NCAA's latest graduation success rates reveal a noteworthy achievement for the Buckeyes. Ross Bjork, the Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletics Director, stated, "We’re just really proud of the academic profile." Twenty-three varsity teams boasted a graduation rate of 90% or higher, while 15 teams scored a perfect grade.
Building upon this theme of success, President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. emphasized that the university continues to strongly focus on the "student" part of the "student-athlete" equation. He told trustees in a statement obtained by OSU News, "We’re very proud of our tradition of excellence on and off the field." The university's impact extends beyond the realm of sports, touching all of Ohio’s 88 counties through various community projects and initiatives outlined in a new university impact report.
The board meeting also served as a platform to discuss key developments in infrastructure. The OSU's Master Planning and Facilities committee examined the timeline for their new University Hospital, slated to open in early 2026. Carter expressed his anticipation not just to inaugurate the building, but was far more excited about the potentially transformative medical advances the facility promises for areas such as cancer care and organ transplantation. The construction concluded both on time and within the financial forecast, employing a peak of 1,200 workers.
Among other actions taken during the meeting, trustees approved several academic and facility advancements. These included the establishment of an Executive Master of Health Administration degree and the approval of construction contracts for projects like the East Hospital elevator and fire suppression system renovations. Furthermore, a comprehensive report on low-enrollment courses and duplicate programs was sanctioned, in addition to the authorization for increasing golf course membership dues and fees for the upcoming year.
The gathering also struck a somber note as resolutions were made in memoriam for several esteemed faculty members who had passed away, including Ann D. Christy and Clyde C. Goad. The board additionally greenlighted several personnel appointments and reappointments encompassing various colleges and disciplines. Notables such as Elliott Bendoly and Laura Flannigan are now appointed to distinguished chair positions within their respective departments.
Finally, OSU is keeping an eye on the future with the approval of the FY25 Progress Report on the Ohio Task Force on Affordability and Efficiency in Higher Education recommendations and the University Foundation Report's establishment of multiple endowed chairs and scholarships. In a move forward in campus elegance and honoring commitment to the university, the board also sanctioned the naming of various spaces across its myriad facilities.
