The tragic fate of a 2-year-old Oklahoma City girl, who was mauled to death by a family dog in November, has led to first-degree murder charges for her parents, following an investigation into the harrowing incident. Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna announced the upgraded charges from second-degree to first-degree murder against 24-year-old Darci Lambert and 34-year-old Jorden McGuire, News9 reported.
On the night of November 18, a 911 call brought police to the Northeast Oklahoma City home, where they discovered the child deceased with severe injuries indicative of a dog attack, according to authorities. In a sobering update to the case, KFOR revealed that law enforcement removed four dogs from the premises, three of which were malnourished, alongside two bearded dragons. Behenna, labelling the case as "unspeakably tragic," highlighted the parents' "complete disregard for the health, safety, and welfare of their child, and their failure to protect her despite knowing she was at risk, led to her death" as key factors in the upgraded charges.
Detailed court documents unveiled by KOCO disclosed that the girl, identified as LockLynn McGuire, suffered from disconcerting bite marks and injuries. She had been confined in a room with the fatal canine, restrained by a double-sided toddler lock that prevented her from escaping. The grim narrative further described a previous incident on November 6, where the same dog inflicted a severe injury to the child, resulting in her receiving plastic surgery for a partially severed ear. This prior attack compounded the prosecution's case against the parents.
Lambert and McGuire are currently held on a $1 million bond each. The first-degree murder charge carries a penalty that could result in life imprisonment or life without the possibility of parole. The DA's office asserts that the defendants "maliciously failed to protect their child and permitted her to remain in the presence of a dangerous, malnourished dog," fully aware of the significant risk to the child, unwarranted by any protective parental instinct that one might presume inherent, as per KOCO.
