Charitable giving typically increases during the holiday season, a trend that can also attract fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting donors. In response, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about the rise of fake charities and is urging the public to remain cautious when making donations.
In a recent social media post, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office highlighted the increasing number of fake charities, stating, "'Tis the season...for scammers to try to take advantage of your holiday goodwill. This is the time of year when we see more and more fake charities popping up." These scams, they emphasized, not only divert much-needed funds from legitimate organizations but also undermine trust in charitable giving as a whole.
Addressing the concern, TRIAD Director Ssgt. Tara Hardin offered insight into navigating these murky waters. In the segment "A Senior Moment," a part of the social media post by the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, Hardin provided concrete guidelines to help donors ensure their contributions indeed reach the intended beneficiaries. It is through such education that potential victims can arm themselves against deception, vetting the legitimacy of the nonprofits that vie for their attention and resources.
