Oklahoma Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton is calling for further negotiations regarding the poultry industry’s impact on the Illinois River Watershed in eastern Oklahoma. During a visit yesterday, he met with local farmers and stakeholders involved in the State of Oklahoma v. Tyson Foods case. The federal lawsuit, decided in the state’s favor in 2023, addressed allegations of environmental harm caused by poultry waste used as fertilizer. Following the ruling, both sides were instructed to negotiate damages, though progress has stalled, according to a press release.
Paxton’s meetings with community members focused on resuming discussions to resolve outstanding issues related to the case. Topics included compliance with environmental regulations and the operations of local poultry producers. State officials noted the importance of continuing dialogue to address the requirements outlined in the court ruling.
The visit also provided an opportunity for farmers and industry representatives to share updates on their operations and regulatory compliance. Paxton highlighted the ongoing process and the need for both sides to continue discussions as part of implementing the court’s decision.
