An hours-long standoff in Osceola County culminated in the arrest of a 33-year-old man, Dalton Sears, after an altercation that began early Sunday. According to ClickOrlando, the sheriff's deputies were responding to a criminal mischief complaint when they heard a gunshot and observed Sears attempting to hide in the woods. The situation escalated when Sears fled from the deputies and took refuge under a mobile home, resulting in a standoff that lasted nearly 14 hours.
With no small amount of drama, the standoff saw deputies discovering drugs and several firearms in the vicinity of Sears' hideout. Under the mobile home, Sears eluded capture for close to 14 hours, during which gas and pepper balls were deployed to coax him out. As reported by WESH, when deputies cornered him, the suspect managed to use one of the not fully discharged gas canisters against the law enforcement officers, spraying seven deputies with chemical gas.
The confrontation caused considerable anxiety among neighborhood residents, with law enforcement employing sirens and loud commands in a persistent bid to end the stalemate. "Everybody's been bothered by this. The whole neighborhood," a resident explained, conveying the community's disruption, WESH detailed.
Ultimately, Sears' resistance came to a close shortly before 3 p.m. when he surrendered to the deputies. After being taken safely into custody, he was charged with possession of drugs, resisting arrest with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer. All affected deputies were treated for gas exposure and are said to be doing OK.
As the area returns to normalcy, Sears faces the legal aftermath of the incident. He was initially due in court yesterday; however, at the request of prosecutors, the hearing was postponed today.
