Last week, a KLM flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam was abruptly canceled after a passenger, later identified as Johannes Van Hirtum, allegedly opened an emergency exit door during taxiing, leading to the deployment of the aircraft's inflatable slide. Fox5 Atlanta reported, according to the Atlanta Police Department, that Van Hirtum was taken into custody and now faces several charges including reckless conduct and interfering with security measures.
In the moments leading to the incident, Van Hirtum reportedly panicked believing he saw another passenger with a weapon and even made a 911 call about a possible weapon on board this precipitated the return of the aircraft to the ramp and subsequent police intervention, Van Hirtum was detained and appears to be the same individual reported by People to have been evaluated by EMTs at the scene for a mental health episode. According to a People report, Jack Anderson, a fellow passenger, relayed that Van Hirtum loudly claimed someone had a gun on board, his actions promptly escalated to opening the emergency exit.
The incident necessitated a significant response, with KLM confirming to People that all passengers had to be rebooked on subsequent flights due to the cancellation. The seriousness of the situation was further emphasized by another passenger, Jane Anderson, who noted to People, "Things kind of escalated quickly and he ran and they pounced on him, but he had already opened the door to the aircraft." Meanwhile, crew members sought to address the disruption swiftly, with one suggesting to an air traffic controller, "Easiest way, I think, is to get rid of the psychotic passenger here at this position with the police presence," information originally shared by People.
As the situation concluded without injuries, many passengers expressed relief; Jack Anderson also added, his relief palpable, "We are glad that he didn't open it mid-flight." The Atlanta Police Department has indicated that the investigation's findings are still preliminary, and as such, details could change as new information becomes available, this note on the fluid nature of the incident's facts was relayed by People. Van Hirtum was transported to Clayton County Jail following the incident, and authorities are continuing their thorough investigation into the matter.
