PhilaPort has officially begun construction on a new cruise terminal in Philadelphia, which is slated to open in April 2026, just in time to join the city's 250th-anniversary celebrations. The 16-acre site, located conveniently next to the Philadelphia International Airport along the Delaware River, aims to boost the city's status as a cruise travel destination. According to a 6abc report, Norwegian Cruise Line is scheduled to operate seasonal sailings from Philadelphia to Bermuda and other locales.

The initiative is not only set to expand travel options but is also expected to significantly benefit the local economy. In a statement obtained by NBC10 Philadelphia, organizers forecast the creation of approximately 2,185 new direct and indirect jobs, and an additional $300 million economic output for the Commonwealth. “Philadelphia’s debut as our newest homeport marks a strategic milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and our three award-winning brands, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises,” expressed Daniel Farkas, executive vice president, general counsel and chief development officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

With a focus on regional growth and enhancing guest experiences, PhilaPort's cooperation with major partners reflects a concerted effort to leverage Philadelphia’s rich history and tourism potential. Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort executive director and CEO, emphasized the unique opportunity the partnership represents. “It took a lot of hard work to bring this agreement together, and Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line were committed every step of the way. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we are ready and excited to welcome cruise passengers this spring,” Theobald told Delaware Online. The inaugural season seems to be intentionally timed to coincide with national events hosted in Philadelphia, such as the World Cup and the MLB All-Star Game.

The development also coincides with America's semiquincentennial in 2026, presenting a fitting occasion to launch this significant venture. Farkas highlighted the importance of the milestone, "As we prepare to launch in 2026, this terminal represents the next wave in our commitment to innovation, regional growth, and delivering an unmatched guest experience from ship to shore," he mentioned in a statement provided to NBC10 Philadelphia
