Philadelphians are facing a glaze of challenges this morning, coming in the slippery guise of freezing drizzle and icy conditions that prompted the National Weather Service to extend a winter weather advisory until 10 AM EST. According to NWS Philadelphia, residents should exercise caution, as "Very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges are possible."
The advisory, encompassing parts of northern Delaware, northeast Maryland, central and southern New Jersey, and east central and southeast Pennsylvania, warns of potentially treacherous travel conditions. Offering advice to locals facing the freeze, the NWS statement advises to "Slow down and use caution while traveling," noting the risk of possible power outages in these conditions.
While the current overcast sky looms with a chilly 33°F, a moderate thaw is on the horizon. Expected patchy drizzle or freezing rain should give way to cloud cover and a warmer high near 33 later in the day. A calm wind tonight will usher in mostly cloudy skies and a low around 25, giving respite before a slight chance of rain sweeps in this afternoon.
Looking ahead, Philadelphians shouldn't pack away their rain gear just yet. As the workweek looms, Monday promises rain with a high near 58 and vigorous southwest winds reaching up to 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. This is followed by a night of partly cloudy skies and a plunge to around 28, leading to brisk, breezy conditions come Tuesday, as per a report by the NWS. Heralding the New Year, the city can expect partly sunny days with highs teetering around the mid-30s, and a return to sunshine on Friday with a high near 30.
