The City of Phoenix has prolonged the closure of Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain as it undertakes measures to mitigate risks posed by unstable boulders, identified in the wake of recent storms. Since its temporary closure by the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department in mid-October due to potential erosion concerns, a detailed course of action has been outlined to stabilize and eventually remove the hazardous boulders.

Commencing the week of November 24, engineering teams have engaged in a careful procedure to ensure public safety, as stated in a city report. Despite the efforts executed thus far, the boulders are still a threat, necessitating continued work into the week of December 8. The scheme, hailed for its efficiency and minimal disruption, involves drilling into the boulders and injecting an expanding grout which, under pressure, is meant to split them without causing further instability.

Aiming to maintain the natural appeal of Echo Canyon, restoration will immediately follow the completion of the stabilization work. "We understand how important Echo Canyon is to residents and visitors alike," Cynthia Aguilar, Parks and Recreation Director, elucidated in a statement. "We’re taking a careful, methodical approach to restore Echo Canyon, and we appreciate the community’s patience while we ensure the trail is safe again."

In conjunction with the trail safety operations, the Parks and Recreation Department is seizing this moment to instill additional improvements at the trailhead, including modernized restrooms and upgraded parking lot facilities. These enhancements are being orchestrated simultaneously with the boulder stabilization work to avert future closures and expedite the reopening of the trail, as inhabitants of the area are urged to explore alternate hiking routes, such as Cholla Trail at Camelback Mountain and South Mountain Park and Preserve, among others during the interim.
