The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a weather forecast that could significantly impact the region starting today, with a dynamic shift to much colder conditions expected after a warm front brings rain and possibly an isolated rumble of thunder to areas south of Pittsburgh by mid-morning, as per the National Weather Service. Residents can expect warmer temperatures briefly before a strong cold front brings a notable drop in the mercury, accompanied by rain transitioning to snow, particularly in the Interstate 80 corridor and the ridges, where impactful accumulations are anticipated.
Travelers and locals should brace for a windy start to the week, with the NWS issuing a Wind Advisory from 1 AM on Monday, cautioning of gusts up to 50 mph across much of the area. A High Wind Watch for eastern Tucker county in West Virginia, where gusts could approach 65 mph, the change in weather is marked by a powerful cold front trailing the warm one. The winds may persist into Tuesday, with temperatures plummeting, and rain turning to snow as early as Monday morning, escalating through the afternoon and evening.
Looking towards midweek, sporadic snow showers are expected to continue as the longwave trough persists over the region, with temperatures keeping to the colder side. A reinforcing cold front due late Wednesday could intensify snow chances and possibly bring additional lake enhancement, leading into what forecasters suggest will be a chilly end to the week.
For aviators, mixed flying conditions are forecasted to start today, with varying conditions ranging from LIFR to MVFR to VFR due to low stratus and fog. Becoming more complicated with approaching precipitation and gusty winds, especially post-frontal conditions anticipated after 06Z Monday, when a line of showers could temporarily reduce visibility and bring strong gusts. However, a slightly drier slot is expected immediately following the frontal passage, it won't be long before another wave of snow showers returns, reducing visibility and potentially complicating travel and transport once again.
In light of these forecasts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia have all issued Wind Advisories, and a High Wind Watch has been declared for Tucker County, WV, as detailed by the National Weather Service. Residents and travelers in these regions are urged to stay informed and prepare for the inclement weather ahead.
