As the year winds to a close, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has issued an update on the significant developments of its Building a Better 82nd Avenue project. In a recent announcement, the agency outlined the efforts carried out throughout 2025 and expressed gratitude to the community for their patience and support.
Progress has been tangible along 82nd Avenue, with PBOT and their construction partners, including Raimore Construction, Interlaken, and Moore Excavation, successfully managing to construct nearly 1 mile of sidewalks. They've also announced the completion of six new pedestrian crossings and modifications to traffic signals, aimed to surely improve both safety and accessibility for pedestrians. Furthermore, road pavements have been extended, and street lighting has seen a significant upgrade.
According to the PBOT statement, "Together, we ... Constructed nearly 1 mile (5,120 linear feet) of sidewalks, including sidewalk infill on SE Mill Street and sidewalk infill near Portland Community College." These developments are part of an array of improvements that also includes the planting of 115 new trees and the installation of 53 sumps for better drainage. These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to revamping the 82nd Avenue corridor.
The PBOT release emphasized that apart from visible infrastructure enhancements, environmental concerns have also been addressed with the planting of trees and upgrades to street lights to energy-efficient LEDs. There's been an effort to also conveniently install 54 new street light poles, improving not only the aesthetics but the nighttime visibility and safety for residents and visitors alike.
PBOT's statement notes, "Completed six new pedestrian crossings: at NE Beech, Klickitat, and Schuyler streets; and SE Clinton, Ash, and Knapp streets," showcasing PBOT's commitment to pedestrian-centric improvements. These crossings are part of a larger scheme to foster a more walkable and connected community along the 82nd Avenue corridor.
With 2025 coming to an end, PBOT has set a strong foundation for the continued enhancement of 82nd Avenue. Portland residents can look forward to further improvements as the multi-year initiative proceeds, with the specificity and tangible examples of progress charting a path of consistent betterment for this critical artery of the city.
