An early-morning vehicle fire on southbound State Highway 130 in east Austin left one person dead and shut down the busy toll road for hours, backing up traffic and stalling the morning commute. First responders arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, and an adult was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews also shut down the ramp from eastbound U.S. 290 to southbound SH 130 while they worked the incident.
According to CBS Austin, the Austin Police Department received a call at about 5:30 a.m. reporting a small vehicle fire in the 10500 block of southbound SH 130, just south of U.S. 290. Police said the fire intensified until the vehicle was fully engulfed, and Austin-Travis County EMS medics pronounced one adult patient dead at the scene.
Crews Battle Blaze As Lanes Shut Down
Fire and rescue teams worked to knock down the flames and secure the area while APD crash investigators began trying to piece together what happened. With all southbound lanes closed, traffic backed up on approaching routes, and several motorists had to detour around the scene. Crews also managed any potential fluid spills and cleared debris to make the roadway safe.
Highway Slowly Reopens After Investigation
Officials later reopened all southbound lanes. CBS Austin reports APD said the lanes were fully reopened at about 10:25 a.m. The station noted crews stayed on site for additional cleanup before the ramp to southbound traffic was cleared. Authorities have not released the identity of the person who died or any details on what may have sparked the fire.
Deadly Pattern On SH 130 Corridor
State Highway 130 and its service roads have been the site of multiple serious and fatal crashes in recent years, as per Vision Zero ATX. Advocacy groups and transportation officials have repeatedly pointed to the corridor's high speeds and mixed local access as factors that can turn routine incidents into deadly ones.
APD continues to investigate the crash and fire. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Austin police, and local authorities are expected to provide further updates as they become available.
