The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority recently introduced Samuel Down as one of the new members of Recruit Academy 21. Samuel comes from a big family with seven sisters and six dogs. He has worked part-time as a firefighter in Snohomish County and has also done roof and gutter cleaning. Now, he’s starting his journey as a recruit firefighter, according to the Puget Sound Fire.
The personal side of Down, as shared in Puget Sound Fire's Facebook post, centers on a profound connection with his dog and an enthusiasm for water and snow sports, particularly snowboarding, a pastime he tries to indulge in throughout the winters. His journey to firefighting began in high school, where the fire science program sparked not just a career choice but a vocation rooted in a sense of purpose and community.
"I was able to spend time around people who worked in this field and learn why they had such a deep passion for their craft," Down told the Puget Sound Fire, emphasizing the influences that shaped his career direction. His dedication is further solidified by his perspective on community service, which he equates to prioritizing others and applying one's abilities to make substantive differences when circumstances are dire or even in daily acts of assistance.
Down detailed his concept of service, saying, "To me, service to the community means putting others before myself and using my skills to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me," according to the Puget Sound Fire post. Puget Sound Fire welcomed Samuel Down to their team, using hashtags like #LoveTheCov to show their connection to communities such as Covington, Kent, SeaTac, Tukwila, and Maple Valley.
