In response to incoming rains, the City of Sacramento will open two weather-respite centers from December 31 through January 5, 2026. The Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd. can host up to 50 guests, allows pets, and provides storage for personal items, opening at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the City of Sacramento.

The North 5th Street Navigation Center at 700 North Fifth St. can shelter 20 adults nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., but pets are not allowed. Visitors there are asked not to gather or linger outside to ensure smooth operations, as reported by the City of Sacramento.

The City of Sacramento’s libraries and community centers will stay open during normal hours for shelter from the weather. Additional respite is available at designated centers, including the Warren E. Thorton Youth Center at 4000 Branch Center Rd., open through January 5, 2026. Residents can contact 211 or visit their website for information on available centers. Free transportation to and from the centers is provided by Sacramento Regional Transit for those showing a flyer, printed or as a screenshot. The City of Sacramento will monitor weather and site capacity and may extend operations or open more centers as needed.
