
The City of Saint Paul is shining a spotlight on its small businesses this season, as the Small Business Newsletter announced the winners of the 9th Annual Business Awards. The awards, which hold esteem for representing local values such as equity and diversity, have crowned Italian Pie Shoppe with the Traditions Award, acknowledging its two-decade presence in the community. Life Juices snagged the People’s Choice Award, Lost Fox was named New Kid on the Block, Minnesota CarePartner's Roots Wellness Center earned the Good Neighbor accolade, and Vikings and Goddess Pie was honored with the Alice O'Brien Award for its woman-owned business excellence, as reported by the City of St. Paul.
Within the bounds of administrative relief, the city is also offering a 'permit holiday' ahead of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, lifting fees and requirements for select permits through January 7, 2026, this includes the waving of obstacles for downtown amplified sound, extended park hours, and simplified processes for tent permits and sidewalk use – a move to ease the way for local entrepreneurs during the expected influx of visitors, as per the City of St. Paul.
Moreover, Saint Paul's vibe is getting a further boost as the city transforms into a "vibrant winter destination," highlighting festive shopping experiences and major events from the GLOW Holiday Festival to the European Christmas Market. Local businesses are at the center of this winter wonderland, providing unique shopping finds and holiday treats that contribute to the celebration of Saint Paulidays.
Keeping with the times, the City of Saint Paul is also looking forward to the 2026 STAR Grant Rounds, scheduled to open in February, building upon the success of this year where, according to the City of St. Paul, 198 Saint Paul businesses benefited from $3.34 million in grants; meanwhile, helping hands are extended with graffiti removal support and a reminder to stay informed about snow emergencies, with alerts available in multiple languages. Finally, the business community is encouraged to seize the opportunity to apply for the MN PROMISE Act – Round 2 before the December 14 deadline.
