With its home church heavily damaged by fire, a neighborhood food pantry spent Monday hustling to give away every last item on its shelves. Volunteers with Rivers of Hope Ministries pulled together an emergency, drive-up distribution so usable food does not spoil while the building is evaluated, as reported by KENS5.
As reported by KENS5, the fire hit Grace Fellowship Baptist Church on Sunday, prompting organizers to set a drive-up distribution for 2:00 p.m. Monday at 7804 Eckhert Road. According to KENS5, the effort is drive-up only, and volunteers are clear that all food must go, with distribution continuing until supplies run out.
The Pantry And Its Role In Leon Valley
Rivers of Hope Ministries runs the H.O.P.E. (Help Other People Eat) pantry inside Grace Fellowship and typically serves neighbors on a bi-monthly schedule. The organization’s site outlines its regular service dates and urges donors and volunteers to keep supporting pantry operations while staff sort through the fire damage and salvage what they can.
How To Help Right Now
Organizers told KENS5 they urgently need volunteers, a truck to hold shelving, a refrigerator, a deep freezer, a new storage building, and a temporary location as they recover from the fire. The ministry said it will be closed for the foreseeable future, but leaders stressed that the mission to serve families will continue with help from the community.
Those able to pitch in are asked to email [email protected] or visit the Rivers of Hope Ministries website for updates. Organizers are asking neighbors who come to the distribution at 7804 Eckhert Road to arrive with empty trunks and plenty of patience for the drive-up process.
