San Diegans can stash their fare cards on New Year's Eve. The Metropolitan Transit System and the North County Transit District are rolling out complimentary rides across their networks starting the evening of Dec. 31. The free-ride window begins at 6:00 PM and runs into the early hours of Jan. 1, with extra late-night trains and buses added to help people get to and from celebrations. Agency leaders say the goal is to cut down on impaired driving, take some pressure off ride-hailing services, and give everyone more ways to celebrate safely.

What’s free and when

Complimentary rides apply to all MTS buses and trolley lines after 6 p.m. on Dec. 31, according to MTS. NCTD says the free period covers COASTER and SPRINTER trains as well as BREEZE buses, FLEX and LIFT paratransit, and NCTD+ on-demand trips, with promo code NYEFREE available for a limited window on NCTD+, per NCTD. Both agencies say fares will not be required for customers boarding after 6 p.m., and normal schedules will resume on Jan. 1.

Extra trains and late-night service

MTS is running extra late-night Trolley trips, and the agency notes that several Blue, Green, Orange and Copper Line trains are scheduled past midnight with select last runs after 2 AM to give Downtown revelers more ways home. "By offering free rides and expanded service, we’re making it easier to celebrate, plan ahead, and get home safely," MTS Board Chair Stephen Whitburn said, per MTS. The agency also highlighted added Coaster and Sprinter trips that will help connect North County to downtown San Diego for the holiday.

Plan your trip

Riders are encouraged to check holiday timetables and service alerts before heading out, as both NCTD and MTS have posted full New Year's Eve schedules online. For detailed timing and the NCTD+ promo-code window, see NCTD, and read local coverage at FOX 5 San Diego. Expect a reduced Sunday schedule on Jan. 1 and plan transfers accordingly if you rely on multiple agencies.
