As temperatures drop and we grab our coziest blankets, space heaters become a staple in many Seattle homes, but the Seattle Fire Department has issued a stark reminder of the risks these devices pose. In a recent social media post, the department highlighted that heating-related fires are the second most common type of fire during the colder months.
The post, shared on the department's Facebook page, came with essential advice urging residents to maintain a safety perimeter around heaters and to avoid using extension cords with portable heaters, a practice that can lead to dangerous overheating and sometimes fires, the department cautioned not to let anything, not a comforter, magazine, nor slippers, encroach upon that halo of safety around a heater.
As winter sets in, the Seattle Fire Department is reminding residents to use heaters safely. Officials stress the importance of choosing portable heaters with verifiable safety features, including independent lab testing and automatic shut-off mechanisms in case the unit tips over. The department also urges people to turn off heaters before leaving a room or going to bed, noting that these simple precautions can prevent fires and keep homes safe during the colder months.
