Seattle residents are bracing for a wet and windy Christmas week, with a series of weather advisories cautioning of the effects to come. According to the National Weather Service Seattle, a coastal flood advisory remains in effect from 6 AM to noon today, warning of minor coastal flooding that could lead to parking lot, park, and road inundations, particularly around the morning high tide.
While Seattle is familiar with its share of drizzle and damp conditions, the advisory signals a need to prepare and preemptively account for the disruptions that occur when the skies open to more than just a damp whisper. The National Weather Service promises rain "mainly before 4 pm" today and winds that are possibly gusting as high as 40 mph. There's to fairly come a switch in wind direction from north to south, adding an unpredictable element to the already breezy conditions.
Christmas Day won't offer much reprieve, with a "rain likely after 10am" forecast and a 60 percent chance of precipitation to complement the festive cheer. Similar conditions are expected to persist with the forecast for Thursday night predicting "Rain likely, mainly before 10pm," which could make any last-minute holiday traveling more challenging, as stated by the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service Seattle also warns of a high wind event with the high wind warning extending from 10 AM this morning to 7 PM PST this evening. "Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected," they cautioned, urging residents to "remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows" to safely ride out the storm.
