In response to the recent antisemitic terrorist attack during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, Mayor Bruce Harrell of Seattle has issued a statement expressing his dismay over the violence and extending his support to both the victims and the Jewish community as a whole. "I am horrified and heartbroken by the violence against families celebrating the beginning of Hanukkah in Sydney," Harrell remarked, as stated by the Office of the Mayor.
With Hanukkah festivities traditionally marked by themes of strength, hope, and resilience, such acts of terror stand in stark contrast to the season's intended spirit. Mayor Harrell stressed the importance of safe religious expression, vowing heightened vigilance from the Seattle Police Department (SPD) at synagogues and other places of worship around the city.
The condemnation of the Sydney attack by Seattle’s leadership speaks to the broader call for unity against hate-driven violence. With the SPD's security measures, the intent is to offer peace of mind for those partaking in Hanukkah events, allowing traditions to be honored without the shadow of fear. "Hannukah should be a joyful time of year celebrating strength, hope, and resilience of the Jewish people, and our residents should be able to celebrate their faith free from fear," said Harrell, according to the official statement on the City of Seattle's website.
