Travelers in Allegan County faced a major disruption when a semi-truck crash on I-196 near Saugatuck caused a closure of the northbound lanes Monday morning. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. as the driver lost control of the semi-truck during whiteout conditions and crashed through the overpass onto Old Allegan Road, bursting into flames. WWMT reported that a bystander helped the unconscious driver out of the truck before it exploded a second time. Remarkably, the driver survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The aftermath of the crash led to a significant closure as the Michigan Department of Transportation commenced a structural assessment of the overpass. A preliminary inspection revealed "impacts to bridge beams and pier columns," said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Jocelyn Garza, as noted in a statement obtained by WOODTV. The exact extent of the damage is still under determination, and the northbound highway will likely remain closed for most of Tuesday.
While the northbound lanes were shut, southbound I-196 was also temporarily closed but has since been reopened. The northbound closure resulted in traffic being rerouted along Blue Star Highway, creating significant backups near Saugatuck. According to WOODTV, the impacted stretch of I-196 usually sees about 34,000 vehicles on an average day, emphasizing the scale of the interruption caused by the crash.
As clean-up efforts and structural evaluations continue, the repercussions of the crash highlight the danger of winter driving conditions near the lakeshore. Saugatuck Fire Chief Greg Janik told WWMT that high winds, ice, and low visibility make for "very precarious" driving conditions. According to FOX 17, the Allegan County Emergency Management declared the accident was weather-related. This incident serves as an acute reminder to motorists in the region to exercise additional caution during this treacherous season.
