Senator Brian Guthrie, R-Bixby, has filed legislation to update the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act. The proposal would require public bodies to allow time for public comment on agenda items before any official action is taken, according to the Oklahoma Senate.
Guthrie said the goal is to ensure the public has a chance to share input before decisions are made. He added the bill balances transparency with efficiency by allowing public bodies to set time limits or require people to sign up in advance to speak, as reported by the Oklahoma Senate.
The proposal, Senate Bill 1252, would give public bodies flexibility while increasing public participation. The bill will be considered during the 2026 legislative session, which begins February 2, as per the Oklahoma Senate.
