Pepper Lunch, the Japanese fast-casual chain specializing in iron-plate pepper rice and teppanyaki, will open its first Honolulu location next Friday at Moanalua Shopping Center, with a buy-one-get-one-free entrée on opening day. Operated by NIKU LLC, it’s the first of several planned Hawaii locations. The restaurant at 930 Valkenburgh St. will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering staples like beef pepper rice starting at $15.99, combos, premium steaks, and sides including fries, onion rings, and yuzu cheesecake. Staff held a friends-and-family soft opening to test the digital kiosks and hot-plate workflow.
Chain's Hawaii expansion
Pepper Lunch confirmed via GlobeNewswire that NIKU LLC, led by Sean and Nari Uezu, plans up to ten locations across Hawaii, including sites at Hyatt Centric Waikiki and Kapahulu Avenue. The Uezus said their passion for the brand began after a memorable meal in Kyoto.
What to expect at Moanalua
At the Moanalua restaurant, diners will order at the counter or tap through digital kiosks, then get sizzling hot plates brought to the table to finish to their liking, according to Aloha State Daily. The menu is set to feature the signature beef pepper rice alongside sizzling curry rice, teriyaki entrées and pastas, with a long list of a la carte toppings and modestly priced sides. Preview photos show a compact, fast-casual setup designed for quick turns rather than lingering, full-service meals. Staff told the outlet that complimentary garlic-soy and sweet-brown sauces will be stocked at each table so guests can tweak the flavor of their plates.
The Moanalua opening is Pepper Lunch’s first Hawaii location, with future sites planned for Waikiki and Kapahulu. The openings follow the company’s U.S. franchising push and a multi-unit development agreement for Hawaii.
