Pittsburgh is bracing for a wintry cocktail as forecasters from the National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA predict a snowy weekend. Today will be the calm before the storm, featuring dry conditions and chilly temperatures, a brief respite provided by a surge of high pressure. According to the NWS Pittsburgh area forecast discussion, those hoping for a white weekend are in luck, with widespread snow expected to begin on Saturday and peak in accumulation rates overnight into Sunday, especially along and south of the I-70 corridor.
The Winter Weather Advisory previously in effect for Venango, Clarion, Forest, and Jefferson has been cancelled as further snow accumulation is anticipated to be minimal. However, a disturbance forecast to arrive on Saturday brings a new set of concerns, notably impactful snow south of I-70, which a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon is now highlighting. The National Weather Service has indicated areas within the watch could see a 70%-80% probability for 24-hour snowfall accumulations of over 5 inches, as the main impact is expected Saturday evening into Sunday morning, with longer duration possible in higher elevations.
Looking ahead, the forecast for next week doesn't offer a warm reprieve just yet. The deep upper trough crossing the region on Sunday is set to maintain colder temperatures and snow chances into Monday morning, due to a cold WNW/NW flow across the Great Lakes. Pittsburgh residents should bundle up as high temperatures hover in the 15°F to 20°F range, with wind chills poised to plummet into the single digits or even as low as -15°F in some areas of higher elevation in West Virginia. Wind gusts of up to 30-35 mph will only add to the frosty feel. In contrast, the latter part of the week seems more forgiving with rain and warmer temperatures on the horizon.
The aviation sector isn't exempt from the impending weather woes, either. Flights may be disrupted by scattered snow showers north of KPIT overnight. While the conditions are expected to be mainly VFR over the course of the day, the NWS advises passengers to anticipate possible high MVFR. The arrival of a cold front on Saturday and a strong upper-level trough means widespread restrictions and accumulating snowfall could affect most terminals from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Travelers should be prepared for scattered snow showers with occasional restrictions, possibly carrying into Monday amid the cold flow.
Even as the region gears up for this latest weather event, local authorities are urging residents to keep informed through updates and advisories. A list of active watches, warnings, and advisories in effect for Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia can be found on the National Weather Service Pittsburgh website, as the community navigates through yet another weekend of wintry conditions.
