The City of South Milwaukee has reported a banner year for its economic development, boasting a series of projects and initiatives aimed at bolstering the local economy. According to a social media post by the City of South Milwaukee, 13 new businesses received approval for occupancy in 2025. Noteworthy among them is the commencement of a $52 million redevelopment at the former Bucyrus Campus and a separate $3.2 million project at 100 15th Ave.
The city's proactive approach towards modernization was also marked by significant shifts in policy. The Plan Commission and Common Council adopted the first major updates to the city's zoning code since the 1990s, paving the way for a more streamlined process in commercial and residential developments. In addition, the adoption of the 2050 Comprehensive Plan sets the stage for long-term strategic growth. However, amidst these progressive changes, the city didn't overlook the heritage of existing businesses, awarding Bucyrus Business Retention Grants to Venne's Creations Hair Salon, MT Towing & Recovery, and Dupree's Vintage in recognition of their milestone anniversaries.
Continuing the momentum in retail improvements, negotiations are underway to introduce a new Piggly Wiggly Midwest grocery store in South Milwaukee. This potential addition underscores the city's commitment to enhance local amenities and address the consumer needs of its residents. Details on the negotiation's progress, however, have not been disclosed at this time.
Adding to the accolades, Mari's Flowers, Wine, and Gifts alongside GG's Grooming Salon were celebrated as the 2025 Bucyrus Business and New Business of the Year.
