Hours after South Oak Cliff High School’s football team brought home another state title, the celebration in southwest Dallas took a grim turn. A Golden Bears player was arrested Saturday night after a teammate was shot in the neck at a home in the city’s southwest side, according to police and court documents.
Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Xavier Mayfield, who was taken into custody at the scene and faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. An arrest affidavit says officers were called about 9:32 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive, where a witness reported seeing Mayfield holding and swinging a rifle in an upstairs bathroom before a single shot hit another South Oak Cliff player in the neck. The injured player was taken to a hospital, and the affidavit says Mayfield told police he tried to drive the victim there. Those details appear in the arrest affidavit reviewed by WFAA.
Hours After State Title
Earlier that day, the Golden Bears had capped off a storybook run by beating Richmond Randle 35-19 to claim the Class 5A Division II crown at AT&T Stadium. Mayfield played in the game and is credited with a turnover that set up South Oak Cliff’s first score, as reported by The Dallas Morning News. He is listed as a junior defensive back on South Oak Cliff’s roster in the University Interscholastic League archive for the 2024–25 team.
Charges And Custody
Mayfield was booked on an aggravated-assault-with-a-deadly-weapon charge and is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to law-enforcement reporting.
