Last Saturday, DeKalb County's movers, shakers, and community savers flocked together for the annual Spirit of DeKalb Awards, a gala that's more than just a black-tie affair—it's a crusade against hunger. The event underscored an enduring battle against food insecurity, pinning hope onto the proverbial lapel of every attendee ready to shell out for change. According to DeKalb County, the awards are designed to not just celebrate outstanding efforts but to actively stake out funds necessary to bolster the region's food access initiatives.
The gala, with Ryan Cameron—an award-winning personality with a knack for radio—at its helm, featured performances that could have effortlessly to poignantly remind everyone of community unity and the power of collective action. Alex Anh, with his electric violin, alongside Orchestra Noir, provided the evening’s soundtrack. CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson emphasized, “We are here to Celebrate excellence across leadership, innovation, community impact, and service,” which she said in a statement obtained by DeKalb County news. She underscored the event's dual role in honoring those who embody service and securing resources to ensure everyone has food on their plate.
Among the honored was The Same House, a local hero in the trenches of community amelioration. They walked away with a sizable $25,000 check, a nod to their commitment to mending socio-economic fractures. The donation, as per county reports, is set to support the organization's ongoing efforts to serve up opportunities for the less fortunate and to seriously cut back on hunger pangs experienced by citizens across the county.
DeKalb County also paused to honor two fallen heroes, Officer David Rose and Master Firefighter Preston Fant. Officer Rose was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and the Meritorious Service Award, while Firefighter Fant received the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Medal of Honor.
