Tensions flared briefly in St. Johns County as law enforcement responded to what was later deemed a non-event. A social media communication from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the supposed incident on December 16 was a fabrication. The post relayed that earlier on Tuesday night, authorities had been alerted to a reported shooting in the vicinity of Quail Vista Dr. and Marsh Landing, with detailed information about the alleged victim, a suspect, and a vehicle associated with the incident.
Swiftly acting on the call, the Sheriff's Office dispatched units that engaged multiple addresses. In their earnest effort to protect, they detained an individual based on the detailed narrative provided them. But as reported on the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, "Through investigative efforts and contact with the alleged victim, we determined that no shooting occurred." The totality of the information that set the law enforcement machinery in motion was false.
Releasing the individual who was wrongfully detained, the officials took time to verify and refute the claims that had initially caused the alarm. Details were scarce as to the origins of the false reporting, and the Sheriff's Office did not publicly speculate on the motive behind the misinformation.
