After more than a century of partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, St. Stephen's Community House is set to transition into a fully independent nonprofit organization by July 1, 2026. According to a statement from the Catholic Times Columbus, Bishop Earl K. Fernandes and the St. Stephen’s Board of Trustees view this move as an evolution to meet the changing needs of the community they serve. Despite the shift, programs and services are expected to operate uninterrupted during the transition period.

Founded in 1919, St. Stephen’s Community House has been a bedrock in the Linden neighborhood, providing a variety of services to Central Ohio families, including pathways to food access, early childhood education, and empowerment initiatives. As reported by ABC 6, Bishop Fernandes underscored that this next chapter is not due to any conflict, reinforcing a continuous commitment to family service.

St. Stephen's CEO, Marilyn Mehaffie, acknowledges the significance of their legacy and title, telling NBC4i, "The name St. Stephen’s is nostalgic. It means a lot to the people in the community. So, this will be something very different." A new name to reflect the organization's independent status is set to be announced as the transition reaches completion.

During the transition, a collaborative effort between the St. Stephen’s leadership, the Board of Trustees, and representatives appointed by Fernandes will oversee the process. In the heart of the Linden neighborhood, where several families served by St. Stephen's are located, the facility seeks to expand programming and deepen community impact through this strategic change. St. Stephen's remains open to "additional funding opportunities as an independent non-profit," and continues welcoming support from donors and volunteers, as per NBC4i's coverage.
