A standoff at the Atlanta Ritz-Carlton culminated with the arrest of a suspect yesterday, as reported by FOX 5. Atlanta police were called to the scene following reports of a man who refused to leave and might have been armed.
The situation led to road closures around the downtown hotel, including Andrew Young International Blvd. and Ellis Street, for several hours. However, the standoff was resolved by the evening, around 5:30 p.m., this news was confirmed by both WSB-TV and FOX 5. Neither outlet has received confirmation regarding the recovery of a weapon or detailed particulars such as whether the suspect was a hotel guest or where exactly within the hotel the standoff occurred.
Witnesses at the scene expressed their concerns, with one local worker, Christopher Trauco, telling FOX 5, "Am I shocked? Absolutely not! It happens quite a bit downtown here." While another bystander, Marcus Lopez, who was staying at the hotel and found himself stranded outside the hotel behind the yellow tape mused to WSB-TV, "It’s cold. I don’t know what we’re going to do for the next couple hours."
Visitors caught in the middle of the situation also weighed in; Prit Patel, visiting from Tampa told WSB-TV, "Tampa isn’t the safest place at times either, but it’s kinda scary to think that at the Ritz, like knowing it’s very safe, higher-end," reflecting the surprise of encountering such an episode at what is considered a luxury establishment. As the investigation continues, a response from Marriott, which owns the Ritz-Carlton, remains pending.
