Two people are now in custody after a December shooting in Stockton that left a 24-year-old man dead and a 28-year-old woman wounded, according to city investigators. Officers were called to a parking lot in the 300 block of South Wilson Way in the early morning hours of Dec. 14. Police say they later arrested 48-year-old Swavette Wilson in Stockton on Dec. 18 and 47-year-old Devon Hardy in San Leandro, who was extradited back to Stockton on Dec. 30. Homicide detectives say they are still working the case, following up on leads and talking with witnesses.
Stockton police report that the first 911 calls came in around 1:22 a.m. on Dec. 14. Responding officers found a 24-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman in the parking lot, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. According to SFGATE, the woman survived with injuries described as not life-threatening, while the man later died from his wounds. Homicide detectives took over the investigation in the days after the shooting.
Arrests and booking
Investigators say they first arrested Wilson on Dec. 18 in Stockton, booking her into the San Joaquin County Jail on homicide charges. Detectives later identified Hardy as a second suspect. Police say San Leandro officers took Hardy into custody, and he was transported back to Stockton and booked on homicide-related charges on Dec. 30. The Stockton Police Department released booking photos of both Wilson and Hardy as part of its update to investigators and the public. Investigation continues
Detectives have not publicly discussed a possible motive or provided additional details about what led up to the shooting. Stockton police are asking anyone who was in the area that night, or who has video or other evidence, to contact the department’s Homicide Unit. earlier coverage of the Dec. 14 shooting and police appeals for witnesses noted that investigators were casting a wide net for tips. The department says detectives are still tracking down new information and interviewing potential witnesses.
What happens next
Both suspects are being held in the San Joaquin County Jail on homicide or homicide-related counts, according to police and local reporting. Booking, however, is not the same as a conviction. The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office will review the case file and decide whether to file formal charges and what to pursue in court.
