Chaos erupted in a Home Depot parking lot when 20-year-old Eduardo Garcia Hernandez allegedly threatened people with a box cutter knife yesterday. According to the San Rafael Police Department, the incident occurred at the 111 Shoreline Parkway location, prompting several emergency calls around 10:45 AM.
Responding officers encountered Hernandez near the store's entrance, where he was reportedly uncooperative initially, before being subdued after several minutes of de-escalation efforts. During the arrest, Hernandez spat on several of the officers, and they retrieved a box cutter from his possession. The police took him into custody on charges including felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism.
No physical injuries were reported, although at least four victims were threatened in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. Hernandez allegedly chased two individuals, one of whom had to be helped into a car by another victim, for cover. It was at this juncture that Hernandez was accused of vandalizing the vehicle. An act of bravery by a Home Depot employee, who confronted Hernandez and blocked his path into the store, was highlighted as potentially preventing further violence.
While the motive behind Hernandez's actions remains unclear, the swift response of the San Rafael Police and the courage displayed by a Home Depot employee helped avert a potentially more difficult situation. The police have encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact them through their tip line or website. "Fortunately, none of the victims were stabbed or injured with the box cutter knife," detailed the San Rafael Police. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
