Tensions are flaring in Gaston County where a dispute over a construction contract for the Public Health Department's building renovation has led to a lawsuit. Swinerton Builders, a construction company that was vying for the gig, has filed suit against the county after their bid was rejected. In an update posted on Gaston County's official website, the county administrators responded to the legal action, asserting that they conducted the bid process lawfully and without partiality.
The Gaston County statement, issued today, December 18, was clear in its stance: "Gaston County denies the allegations in the lawsuit," citing that "All bidders were treated fairly and in accordance with the law." The bid submitted by Swinerton, though competitive, reportedly contained errors that the County claims they could not overlook as per state regulations, leading to the dismissal of their proposal. This decision, however, has not sat well with the builders, prompting the current courtroom standoff.
On Swinerton's end, the company appears to be fighting tooth and nail to reverse Gaston County's decision. Details of the allegations made by Swinerton in their lawsuit have not been disclosed, but the legal move is a clear indicator of how heated the bidding process for public contracts can become. Gaston County, on the other hand, is standing firm on their position, indicating their readiness to "fight Swinerton’s effort to stop this critical project,” as they put it. The overarching priority for the county, as elaborated in their statement, is to ensure that "the Health Department and its partners can continue to provide essential services to the community."
