The halls might be decked with boughs of holly but don't forget about the furry friends waiting to light up your home this holiday season. Tampa's Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is reaching out to the community, encouraging residents to think of the long-stay shelter pets during the festivities. A heart-wrenching tally includes 41 dogs who've crossed the 100-day mark at the shelter, with a few witnessing over 200 days and six poor pups surpassing 300 days. These figures starkly contrast the standard two-week stint most shelter pets face before being adopted.

Every one of these animals brings their own life's tale and unique charm. As reported by HCFL.gov, those who've been around, sometimes greet you with undeniable eagerness in their eyes, while the seasoned ones have their favourite nooks and crannies known to the staff. It's not a character flaw that keeps these pets from finding homes, but rather misunderstandings that cause them to be passed over. Some are shy, others thrive on routine, and a few just get lost among the newer, more attention-grabbing arrivals. Yet, outside their kennels, they're all about play – whether that's chasing balls, snuggling, or enjoying leisurely walks with a new friend.

To make an impact, locals are welcomed to take a trip down to the Pet Resource Center and meet the animals for themselves. This year, adoption fees take a hiatus, effectively waived, to encourage more families to consider adoption. On Saturday, the center hosts its "Home for the Howl-idays" event, complete with activities like the Canine Cookie Cabin Contest and a photo booth for keepsake holiday moments, along with adoption goodie bags for new pet parents.

If a full-time pet commitment is off the table, there's still room to make a difference. The "Silent Night" foster program seeks temporary caregivers for pets during the holiday stretch, aiming to quiet the kennels for a spell. Fosters will provide just a roof and some love from next Thursday to Dec. 23 and return their temporary companions between Jan. 2 and Jan. 9.

For all considering this gift of companionship – the Pet Resource Center has streamlined the process, with information and a gallery of adoptable pets available at HCFL.gov/Pets
