A 16-year-old boy was stabbed yesterday at a gas station in Cordova, an event signaling a disturbing breach of the nocturnal peace that citizens like Miracle Smith of Bartlett wouldn't expect in their community. The incident occurred just after midnight at an Exxon station located on Germantown Parkway, as WREG reports. Smith, who frequents that area, expressed her disbelief, saying, "That’s crazy, that don’t normally happen around here actually."
According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), the victim was at the checkout counter when an assailant, with no known association to the teenager, inflicted a stab wound upon him. After committing the act, the suspect fled the scene in a black hatchback, details the FOX13 Memphis article. Subsequently, the teen was quickly transported to Regional One Hospital, initially reported in critical condition, but later updated to non-critical status, as per the Memphis Police.
Law enforcement's investigation efforts led to the swift identification and arrest of 42-year-old Frank Jackson in connection with the unprovoked stabbing. "What transpired for it to happen and why?," asked Smith in a statement obtained by WREG voicing a community's anxiety and the need for comprehension. Jackson was found and detained by the West Memphis Police Department in West Memphis, Arkansas, and is facing charges of aggravated assault.
The victim, whose name has not been released, did not know his attacker according to authorities, highlighting the randomness of the act that has shaken the perceptions of safety among residents of the surrounding communities. "Hopefully something gets done about the crime you know but sometimes I look over my shoulder, but you just got to remain prayerful and just trust got that you will be okay," Smith also told WREG, articulating a hope for change amid uncertainty.
