Texas Governor Greg Abbott has reportedly sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent with a request to initiate an investigation into the nonprofit status of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Abbott's letter, as revealed by the Office of the Texas Governor press release, urges the Treasury Department to suspend CAIR's 501(c)(3) status, calling the organization a "front group" for Hamas and a "direct subsidiary" of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States.
In the letter from the Office of the Texas Governor, it's stated that "Federal investigators and court fillings identify CAIR as a direct subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood and as a 'front group' for Hamas in the United States." As the Governor continues, "Accordingly, I respectfully request that you to swiftly investigate CAIR for suspension of its tax-exempt status." He emphasizes the importance of ensuring that charity does not become a conduit for activities that could endanger Americans or undermine the country's democratic foundations.
Governor Abbott has repeatedly spoken out against what he sees as threats from the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR. He has said that he considers both groups to be foreign terrorist organizations. He has also called for investigations into Sharia courts and directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to look into both the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR, as per the Office of the Texas Governor.
