In a decisive matchup at AT&T Stadium, Texas Tech clinched its first-ever Big 12 Championship with a dominant 34-7 victory over BYU, according to reports from KUTV. The Red Raiders' defense, which has been praised as the best in the Big 12 this season, stifled BYU to a season-low 200 total yards and forced four turnovers, solidifying their place in the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Behren Morton connected with Coy Eakin for two touchdowns, contributing to the offense's strong showing.
An ankle injury to BYU's quarterback, Bear Bachmeier, seemed to significantly impact the team's performance; the Cougars' offense faltered following his injury. Even the usually potent run game, led by the Big 12 rushing leader LJ Martin, couldn't find its usual traction against a relentless Texas Tech defense. As Deseret News highlighted, outside the 90-yard touchdown drive to open the game, BYU was limited to just 110 yards for the rest of the contest.
Ben Roberts, one of the standout players for the Red Raiders, made history with two interceptions during the game, a first in the history of Big 12 championship games, as per KSL. The defensive success was a group effort, with Jacob Rodriguez notching 13 tackles and Romello Height recovering a crucial fumble. Kicker Stone Harrington also played a role, contributing four field goals, despite missing another, which was indicative of the Red Raiders' generally efficient play.
Texas Tech's victory wasn't just a win but a statement, asserting their dominance in a league where they have been persistent fixtures for 30 years. As KUTV reported, BYU now awaits its fate for a bowl game, its playoff dreams dashed, while Texas Tech looks ahead to its very first College Football Playoff appearance with the potential of a first-round bye.
BYU Coach Kalani Sitake acknowledged the challenges faced by his team, as well as the caliber of the opposition. "He was banged up. When you have a lower leg injury, that causes issues for you to throw the ball," Sitake told KSL. Moreover, "I thought overall, they just had a great game plan," he conceded. His remarks underline the day's challenges as Texas Tech outmatched the Cougars on both sides of the ball.
