A man in his 30s was killed Monday morning when a vehicle hit his scooter near Watt Avenue and the American River bridge, in heavy fog that left visibility sharply reduced, authorities said. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
According to CBS Sacramento, the California Highway Patrol said the collision happened just before 8:30 a.m. A vehicle traveling northbound on Watt struck a scooter that was going southbound in the northbound lane, CHP reported. The rider was identified only as a man in his 30s, and officials confirmed the driver remained at the crash site and is cooperating with the investigation.
Watt Avenue’s Safety History
The Watt Avenue crossing at the American River is one of Sacramento County’s busiest and has already drawn scrutiny for crashes and pedestrian strikes. On a sample day, county traffic counts logged nearly 95,000 vehicles at that bridge, and UC Berkeley’s transportation mapping highlighted multiple serious pedestrian incidents there over the last decade, as reported by Yahoo. The mix of heavy commuter traffic and higher speeds has pushed planners to consider safety redesigns on portions of North Watt.
Investigation Ongoing
CHP is still piecing together exactly how the crash unfolded and has not released the rider’s name, per CBS Sacramento. Investigators said they are reviewing the scene along with any available video to determine contributing factors and have not yet indicated whether any charges might be filed.
Fog And Visibility: A Reminder
Fog scatters light and can make small-profile vehicles like scooters especially hard to see, which raises the stakes for everyone on the road during a murky morning commute. The Auto Club advises using low beams instead of high beams, slowing down and leaving extra following distance when fog cuts visibility, steps that can reduce the odds of a crash in poor conditions. AAA offers additional guidance for navigating fog safely.
