On Monday, the serenity of William Blount High School was disrupted following a concerning report of a student brandishing a stolen gun on school property. The Blount County Sheriff's Office has disclosed that a 17-year-old male student, after being seen in a photo with a firearm tucked into his waistband, was taken into custody. According to WVLT, the said student is now also facing charges of burglary for stealing the weapon from a car.
Further investigations revealed another layer to the situation—two other students have been implicated in connected incidents. As reported by WBIR, a 16-year-old boy was charged with burglary and false reporting for allegedly stealing an additional gun from a car. In an error in their response, another 16-year-old was cited for his failure to report the known possession of the gun, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong emphasized the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in these incidents. "The student who reported this did the right thing," Sheriff Berrong told WATE, encouraging other students to follow suit if they witness any suspicious or potentially dangerous activities.
Following the event, the Blount County Schools administration issued a message reassuring parents and students of the safety measures in place. "Student safety is our top priority, and we are following all district policies and law enforcement procedures," the school's administration affirmed in a joint statement from the Director of Schools Justin Ridge and Principal Derrick Crabtree. Additionally, the administrative team announced their collaboration with the sheriff's office to ensure a secure environment, with an increased presence from school resource officers on campus, as per WATE.
