Three teenagers are now in custody following a tumultuous series of events that escalated from a carjacking at a gas station to a high-speed chase and a confrontation with police in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The carjacking happened just after 11 p.m. when a 66-year-old man was accosted at a Sunoco gas station along Roosevelt Boulevard, as reported by 6abc. The victim was held at gunpoint, and his Nissan Rogue was stolen by two young suspects while an accomplice followed in another vehicle.
Chief Inspector Scott Small revealed in a statement obtained by FOX 29 that the stolen car was located within 20 minutes with the help of the victim's cell phone, which had been inadvertently left inside a vehicle. The discovery led to a pursuit that included the stolen SUV ramming into a police vehicle. The chase continued until the teens abandoned the vehicle and attempted to elude capture on foot near Fairmount Park.
During the intense pursuit, one of the teens, a 16-year-old, discharged a firearm when exiting the stolen vehicle, but did not strike anyone. According to NBC Philadelphia, the suspects then fled onto nearby train tracks, where they were apprehended by police. The two other suspects, both 17 years old, were caught shortly thereafter.
Authorities stressed the severity of the incident, with Inspector Small stating, "This was a very, very dangerous situation. In addition to the ramming, you have an individual with a gun who fired a shot after committing an armed carjacking," in an interview with 6abc. The victim of the carjacking was fortunately unharmed in the incident.
The Philadelphia Police Department commended its officers for showing restraint during the episode, as they did not return fire despite being shot at. The teenagers face severe charges for their alleged actions, and the investigation into the entire ordeal is ongoing.
